Summer Singing in Richmond

Join professional singer and music coach Rosie Bradford for a series of fun workshops to help you get your voice in shape ready to go back to choir.

These workshops are open to everyone, and will help you build your vocal strength, develop a good singing technique and keep your voice healthy. Rosie will share lots of easy ways to make your singing more powerful and enjoyable.

Each week we'll look at a common area of singing that singers often ask for help with.

We'll use some examples from the beautiful music that Richmondshire Choral Society will be singing at their next concert on 19 November at St Mary's Church, Richmond (part of the Richmond 950 celebrations).

These include Fantasia on Christmas Carols by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Magnificat by John Rutter and In Terra Pax by Gerald Finzi. We'll also include some old favourites from both classical and pop music, just for fun. All excerpts of the music that you'll need will be provided for you during the sessions.

Each session will include a warm up, fun vocal exercises and a warm down that you can use whenever you like to help you sing freely and positively.

This course of workshops is open to singers at all levels and you don't need to read music to enjoy taking part.

The workshops will take place at Richmond Catholic Church from 7.30-8.30pm, and we are most grateful to the church for lending us this lovely venue.

Members of Richmondshire Choral Society will also be there to help you find out more about joining their friendly choir if you would like to.

26 July, Workshop 1 Breathe Easy

Good breathing is the engine of good singing. It also supports good health and wellbeing and helps us feel good. In this first session, we'll explore some easy ways to boost your breathing and do some easy singing to give your new and improved skills a try.

2 August, Workshop 2 Telling the Story

The way we use our words in singing can transform our performances into something truly magical. In this workshop, you will learn how to use your vowel and consonant sounds to your best advantage. Rosie will also help you to bring out your inner storyteller so that you and your audience can really enjoy the message of the music you sing.

9 August, Workshop 3 I got rhythm!

Rhythm is the backbone of music - without it, everything else becomes a bit floppy! In this session, we'll explore some rhythmic principles that apply to all music, and enjoy some of the fun and unusual rhythms in Finzi's music.

16 August, Workshop 4 Higher and Higher

One of the most common things singers ask for help with is high notes. This session will help you relax into the notes at the top of your range and make a rich, full sound in a way that's kind to your voice.

23 August, Workshop 5 Singing in Harmony

In this last session we will bring together everything we have learned over the last 4 sessions, and explore singing together in close harmony. Rosie will also explore any areas where you have requested some further help with during the course.

Early booking is recommended as places are limited, and if you book and pay by the end of June you'll receive the early bird price of £5.00 per session. We understand that some people may be on holiday during this time so you don't need to book all the sessions to receive this price.

If there are spaces left after 1 July, they will be available to book for £6 per session.

Our next concert on Saturday 4th May is part of Richmond MayFest 2024 and features contrasting works composed a hundred years apart. Verdi, a master of opera, returned to a liturgical text for his final composition Four Sacred Pieces. The influences of Palestrina who he much admired, can be heard throughout. John Rutter took seven well known spirituals, usually solo works in concert, setting them for chorus, solo and ‘orchestra’. It is both joyful and moving. We look forward to seeing you at St Mary's Church, Richmond.
