Choir News for the D & S Times

Richmondshire Choral Society

One of Richmond’s oldest choirs believes that after two difficult years it is now entering a period of greater stability. Having lost two musical directors to severe health problems and spent one year with a temporary, albeit superb, conductor and a second with an acting musical director, he has now been formally appointed as music director and is fully able to take control of the choir.

Musical director Edward Seymour is also Director of Music at Ripon Grammar School and has come to the choir with an impressive record starting as a choirboy in Blackburn Cathedral. In his time as acting musical director he soon become very highly regarded by the choir and members are delighted that he is now more able to put his own stamp on the choir in his choice of programmes and the development of its singing style. Having said that, Mr Seymour was very willing to follow the choir’s recently established policy of performing choral favourite Handel’s Messiah every four years as a springtime performance and will be leading the choir in that next year on May 13.

In the meantime the choir starts rehearsals on Monday September 5 for its Christmas concert on December 17 which will include as choral works Mozart’s Coronation Mass and Pergolesi’s Magnificat as well as a selection of carols both well-known and unusual. Anyone wishing to join the choir can come to their rehearsals which are held in Richmond Methodist church and start at 7.30pm. Alternatively the choir is holding an open Come and Sing Morning on Saturday October 1 from 9.30am to 1.00pm to which anyone who would like to join in with some of the popular choruses from Messiah and Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana is invited. This event is also intended as an opportunity to meet and find out more about the choir for those who are uncertain about coming to a rehearsal.
