Edward's comments on Messiah

Messiah20 May

I thought I would put a few points down 'on paper' about last weekend.

The preceding week for me was the submission week for all coursework and the last round of lessons before GCSE and Alevel students went on study leave. It was, as usual, the most stressful week in the academic calendar. Lurking at the back of my mind each day was Messiah.

Waking up refreshed on Saturday morning, it was fully at the front of mind and I was eager to get cracking.

The rehearsal went well overall. It was a bit of a rush towards the end but every item had an outing. I knew you were saving yourselves and I left the rehearsal feeling satisfied in most areas.

The concert was magnificent! There was a great all round quality in each corner. The orchestra were spot on (on the whole) and never a source of worry. The soloists excellent and you... well you were superb. Almost every lead was confident and penetrating; where they weren't it was my fault. The rapid semiquaver sections were clear and agile. The combined sound especially in Hallelujah, Worthy, and Amen was astounding. And indeed the diction was good!

I was tremendously pleased for you and grateful for your excellent performance. The crowd seemed to enjoy it but as long as you did that's the main thing.

I'm hugely grateful to all the committee for all their preparations in making the concert such a success and, as ever, to Andrew Christer for his valuable support throughout the season.

With the very best of wishes to you all.

Edward
